Kendra moaned as she opened her eyes. “Trucks that stupid should not be allowed on the road.”

Her right arm was lodged neatly in his throat. The bones of her forearm poked out of her flesh angrily. “Well, isn’t this awkward?” she retorted, trying to find the least painful way of dislodging the dead opponent.

After a few screamed epitaphs, she was free. The blade retracted into its now-straight arm and became like an internal splint.

“That was intense!” She swallowed the retch that so desperately wanted to be free. “But awesome.”

“Well,” she said as she shrugged off her pack to look for the first aid kit, “none the worse for the wear.”

At that, the interface produced a near endless list of damages that Kendra merely glazed over as she rolled up her right sleeve to bandage the arm.

After wrapping her arm in a bandage labeled “quick cast,” she looked over the scene while rubbing on the activator cream. Her wounds had all scabbed over nicely. She had deep purple bruises all over her body, and the floor was covered in congealed blood.

“What are they doing?” he demanded, sliding up to Kendra’s table. “Wait, what are you doing?”

“It’s called a picnic, sir,” she returned around a mouthful of a sandwich. “Troops got to eat. You missed the good parts. They were ripping out and eating the hearts of the nearly dead.”

“Why? Is it safe?” His jaw hit the grass.

“It’s what they do.” Kendra scoffed. “You knew this about them when you made the alliance with them. Due to their, let’s call them peculiarities, they are amongst the last unaffected by the recent events.”

“That’s why we need their people, land, resources, and tech.”

“Got to save the world somehow, sir.” She swallowed and glanced at the revelries. “Isn’t that right?”

“Why are our people joining the party?”

She raised a glass. “When in Taurtegara …”

“If you say so …”

“Not to worry. None of our guys ate the hearts.”

“Well, silver linings.” He shook his head in disbelief. “Come, we need to inspect, address, and otherwise meet and greet the troops. Our first victory, such as it is, must be celebrated.”

“What’s your hurry? I saved some meat pie for you. Your favorite, right?”

“Well.” She sat down by the door as the light returned to the darkened normal. “Speaking of nutrition.
